'The Seven Sages of Scotland' storytelling workshop and performance

18 September 2024

Byre Theatre, St Andrews, UK

This two-part event began with a rountable and workshop focused on storytelling, adaptation, and The Seven Sages of Rome. This included a roundtable discussion about the politics, process, and impact of sharing and performing medieval material in modern contexts, and the effects of orality and praxis-led approaches on the study of The Seven Sages in particular. Then followed a storytelling workshop led by Dr Daisy Black (Wolverhampton), designed to introduce the audience to a storytelling-focused approach to their subject, using the stories from The Seven Sages/The Book of Sindbad as material.

In the evening, workshop participants joined the general public in attending a performance of The Seven Sages of Scotland, a contemporary Scots-language adaptation of material from the Older Scots Buke of the Sevyne Sagis. This performance, organised by Caitlin Flynn and Jane Bonsall (St Andrews), was originally staged in July 2023 at the Scottish Storytelling Centre. This reprise at the Byre Theatre included new material, and introduced the audience to a range of storytelling and poetry responses to the original material, and was followed by a Q&A concerning the narrative material, adaptation practice, and language.
